Botswana’s Mombo Camp and Little Mombo Camp have been crowned as the World’s Best Hotel by Travel + Leisure magazine readers in their 18th annual World’s Best Awards 2013. The awards saw the Botswana Tourist spot surpassing luxury brands such as Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont and The Peninsula to gain a top score of 96.6 out of 100, securing the coveted title, world’s best hotel. Also making an appearance on the Top 10 list were 3 South African hotels namely The Singita which came in at number 3, The Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, that made it at number 9 and The Singita Sabi Sand, which took the 10th spot.

Mombo Camp is located in the Mombo Concession on the northern tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators – providing arguably the best big game viewing in all of Africa. Aside from offering luxury accommodations in the middle of the African plains, Mombo also implements a rhino conservation project that reintroduces black and white rhinos to the region. The best big game viewing experience starts on the veranda at Mombo Camp, with wonderful concentrations of game occurring right in front of the camp. Guests often find animals wandering past, right under their rooms!

Mombo is the perfect meeting place of luxury and nature as its 9 spacious tents with ensuite bathrooms blend flawlessly into the open plain of the Okavango Delta. Long verandas take full advantage of the sweeping views of the Moremi Game Reserve while private balconies make for prime bird watching. Each tent features mosquito netting on four-poster beds and both indoor and outdoor showers. Tent No. 1, the farthest from the dining area, is the most tranquil. Offering even more privacy are Little Mombo Camp’s three guest rooms, which are set apart and feature a private plunge pool. Raised walkways connect tents and allow rhinos, elephants, and other animals to wander freely through the camp..

Activities at Mombo Camp include morning and afternoon game drives. Open 4x4s provide an excellent vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game and all the predators – including the big cats. Lion sightings are frequent. Guests at Mombo Camp can also expect to see leopard, wild dog, spotted hyaena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra. Guests can also relax with a post-game drive cocktail in Little Mombo’s treehouse-luxe library or enjoy a delicious dinner under the stars in the boma
